My husband and I had the honor of adopting our daughter, Lucinda, when she was only 3 months old.  We were blessed with a healthy and happy baby.  That said, as she grew up, we came to learn that our daughter had several learning disabilities, amongst them dyslexia. 

 

        Today, thanks to Lucinda’s hard work and our providing her with research-based tutoring, she is excelling at school. Evidence-based, systematic, explicit, and multisensory systems work. However, the system and process of providing access to children is broken.  While the science is there, getting to the right doctor, diagnosis, and remediation can be incredibly difficult, time-consuming, and expensive. I was fortunate enough to have the ability to stop working and refocus my time and energy in navigating the system and identifying the appropriate resources for my daughter.

 

        Unfortunately, many children do not have an advocate. It breaks my heart to think that there are thousands of children in Miami-Dade that have not been formally evaluated and properly diagnosed. Instead of being set up for success, they are being reprimanded for not doing better. They think they are stupid simply because we are not providing the resources for them to succeed. The truth is these children are not failing, we are.  When Lucinda was initially diagnosed, we were told her dyslexia was so severe she might not be able to learn how to read well. I can report, she is currently in 7th grade, reading at a 9th-grade level.
